Located on the southeastern
tip of Kochi Prefecture, the city of Muroto has close
ties to the priest Kobo Daishi. The city was praised highly
by the world famous cosmetologist Shu Uemura for having
"absolutely beneficial water for skin." Muroto
is where the deep seawater movement began.
Utoco Deep Sea Therapy Center and Hotel, produced by Shu
Uemura, is the first residential facility of its kind.

and the French architect Henri Gueydan gave birth to an

The concept of this 250 meter-long white building is "living
with the ocean." It is a new landmark in harmony

deep sea therapy philosophy. For example, the outdoor
corridor allows the body to naturally absorb the coastal
atmosphere.
The theme for the seventeen guest rooms is 'natural and
modern.' Each room has a spectacular ocean view and has

The Bonne Peche restaurant uses the goodness of the Muroto

The water used at Utoco Deep Sea Therapy Center is drawn
from the continental shelf east of the Muroto Cape, where
the deep seawater springs up from a depth of 700 to 1000
meters. A pipeline from the Kochi Prefecture deep seawater
collection facility, "Aqua Farm," continually
supplies water to the center.

Deep sea therapy is a natural
therapy that uses deep seawater (drawn from a depth of
374 meters off of the Muroto Cape) combined with the healing
coastal environment of the Muroto Cape.
Thalassotherapy (Ocean Healing)
Deep sea therapy was developed from thalassotherapy, which
originated in France.
The phrase thalassotherapy comes from the Greek word 'thalasso,'
meaning ocean, and the French word 'therapie,' meaning
healing. In French medical academia thalassotherapy is
defined as a therapy that uses seawater, sea mud, and
seaweed in a coastal environment.
Minerals in the Ocean
The mineral composition of human blood, body fluid, and
amniotic fluid is very similar to seawater. Every life
form on this planet is said to have originated in the
ocean. As a result of various minerals combining together
in the ocean, life began and evolved. Human cellular fluid
is maintained by the same mineral combination that is
found in seawater.
The Benefits of Thalassotherapy
The aim of thalassotherapy is to restore the balance of
the body by taking in the energy of the sea--the source
of all life. The combination of the coastal environment
and the mineral composition of seawater stimulates the

Deep Sea Therapy Exceeds Thalassotherapy

Ordinary thalassotherapy uses surface seawater, but deep
sea therapy uses deep seawater. The light from the sun
does not reach the deep sea, and deep seawater is safe
from surface pollutants. Compared to surface seawater
it is more abundant in minerals, cleaner, and more balanced. |

 Private Jet Bath
This is a massage treatment that uses various levels of
bubbles and jet streams, controlled by computer. Each
part of the body is automatically and systematically massaged.
This treatment stimulates acupressure points and opens
up blood vessels, resulting in better blood circulation.
It also removes stress and tension from the body and helps
the body re-energize and recover from fatigue.
A Private Affusion Shower
This is a shower massage using heated seawater falling
like raindrops. The soft and gentle drops of the shower
give soothing stimulation to the skin. Negative ions are
created by minuscule drops of water which cleanse your
respiratory system and improve your autonomic nervous
system. This treatment is effective for relaxation and
calming; it removes tension from your muscles and fatigue
from your body.
Private Algae Pack
This is an algae pack treatment for the whole body. After
an algae paste is applied, the body is wrapped in an insulating
sheet to increase heat and allow maximum absorption. This
promotes better blood circulation and supplies more oxygen
to the body. By discharging toxins from the body, metabolism
is increased resulting in a slimming effect.
Private Fango Pack
This is a sea mud pack treatment that is applied to specific
areas of the body. Sea mud is applied in a paste form,
and the body is then wrapped in an insulating sheet to
increase heat and allow maximum absorption. This treatment
is effective in increasing flexibility and reducing joint
pain and tension. Because mineral salt is condensed in
the sea mud, it is extremely effective in supplying minerals
to your body.
Aerosol
This treatment takes place in a dark room that invokes
the image of the deep sea. Here guests can inhale and
bathe in a deep seawater mist. An ultrasound wave device
creates negative ions of deep seawater, removing the positive
ions that have accumulated in your body. The effects of
this treatment are relaxation, recovery from fatigue,
and rehabilitation of the respiratory system. It is also
effective in curing nasal inflammation and asthma.
Private Hand Bath
In this treatment your hands are bathed in deep seawater
in a specially-made bathtub. This treatment uses wave
vibration to induce better blood circulation and reduce
tension in your neck and shoulders.
Private Foot Bath--The First in Japan
This treatment is a jet foot bath using deep seawater
in a specially-made bathtub. The bathtub is divided
into hot and cold water sections. The hot water section
uses jet streams, and the cold water section uses jet
streams and jacuzzi. This treatment is good for tired
and swollen feet, and it also improves lower body circulation.
As a result of better blood circulation, lactic acid
from dead cells is expelled from the body which helps
to reduce fatigue.
Chromotherm
This treatment uses either the partial application of
sea mud or the whole-body application of seaweed paste.
After applying either of these, guests enter a dome
which automatically progresses from steaming to color
therapy to shower. Chromo therapy, or color healing,
has the ability to both energize and calm the body.
It also boosts metabolism and stimulates sweating.
 Body Treatment
In this treatment a therapist directly massages the
whole body using oil. This treatment improves the function
of the lymphatic system and also boosts metabolism.
Drinking deep seawater after the massage allows the
body to expel waste.
Facial Treatment
In this treatment your face is cleansed and massaged
by hand according to the condition of your skin. To
help reveal beautiful and natural skin, different facial
packs are used based on skin type.
Deep Sea Pool
This deep seawater pool is maintained at body temperature
(37 degrees Celsius). By using water pressure massage
and walking exercises the body can take in trace elements
of ionized minerals through the skin.
Hammam
This is a relaxing sauna in a private room filled with
mist.
Jacuzzi Bath
On the terrace of the Utoco Deep Sea Therapy Center
you can enjoy sunbathing and atmosphere bathing while
overlooking the ocean. Except for in private rooms we
do not use air conditioning. Instead, we open our windows
so that guests can breath in the nutrients of the seawater
through the breeze while they sunbathe.
